For those of you who like to research and think about this stuff on your own first, the following info is for you.
First, consider the level of distress of your relationship.
Second, consider the resources you have available to do couples therapy together.
Levels of Distress in Couples
Here are some examples of what each level of distress might look like in a relationship.
- High Distress Examples (not fully inclusive of all markers of distress)
- One or both of us are considering ending the relationship
- There has been a recent emotional or attachment-related injury
- We argue constantly and rarely show affection or have peace between us
- We do not talk to each other and rarely share in meaningful ways
- Moderate Distress Examples (not fully inclusive of all markers of distress)
- We are like ships passing in the night; we do life in a functional way, but rarely connect
- We would both like things to be better, but at times wonder if that’s possible
- We can remember a time when it was better between us
- We have time periods of arguing or not speaking to one another
- Low Distress Examples (not fully inclusive of all markers of distress)
- We are committed to the relationship
- We want to be closer and more connected
- We may have some unresolved hurts between us, but are generally friendly toward each other
- We may have traumas individually that we are unsure of how to address between us
Our Time, Money, and Emotional Resources for Therapy
- Time
- We have time in our weekly or monthly schedule to attend sessions regularly in person or virtually
- We can make time for weekly or biweekly meetings, but it will be challenging
- We have more time on weekends or if we take partial days off
- Time is not an issue – we have the ability to select any timing we choose
- Money
- We can add therapy as a line item in our budget and make it happen
- We have little to no available financial means for therapy at this time
- Money is not an issue – we have the financial means to select our preferred method
- Emotional
- We are ready, feel capable, interested, and engaged
- We are weighed down by life stressors, but willing to find a way to do this work
- One or both of us is highly ambivalent about this process – feeling guarded or skeptical
- I am ready, but my partner will not come to therapy with me
